Irlen Syndrome
www.irlen.com
www.irlencentre.ca
Irlen Syndrome is a perceptual problem associated
with light sensitivity. It principally affects
reading and writing based activities, but can also
affect depth perception and night driving.
Fluorescent lighting, glare, high-gloss paper and
black/white contrast intensify the problem.
Irlen Syndrome affects approximately 14% of the
general population and over 45% of those with
reading difficulties. Incidence is also increased in
individuals with attention deficit disorder and
autism. It appears to be quite common in those with
hyper-sensitivities in other areas (ex. touch,
sound, or movement) and treating the light
sensitivity seems to have a positive influence on
“sensory overload” in general. Migraine and headache
sufferers can also often find relief through the
Irlen method.
Individuals with Irlen Syndrome perceive the printed
page and/or their environment differently. They must
constantly make adaptations or compensate.
Individuals are often unaware of the extra energy
and effort they are putting into reading and
perception. Reading rate may be slow and inefficient
reading or there may be poor comprehension, strain,
fatigue and/or an inability to do continuous
reading. This syndrome can also affect
printing/writing, attention span, energy level,
motivation, work production, self-esteem and mental
health.
